Before Elmira, he was interim president of Suffolk University in Boston and previously at Dowling College on Long Island, New York.  Earlier, he was the founding Chancellor of Alamein University in Egypt preceded by the presidencies of Richmond The American University in London (England) and of Wagner College (NY).  He is President Emeritus of Wagner and is widely credited with the College's survival and prominence.

NORMAN SMITH is interim President of Elmira College, a breathtaking small residential college on the New York
-Pennsylvania border where Mark Twain wrote his 
Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn masterpieces.

Earlier, Smith was at Harvard University, where he earned his doctorate and was Assistant Dean of two Harvard graduate schools, Education and Government.  He was part of the inaugural management team of the John F. Kennedy School of Government when it opened its new campus at Harvard in the late 1970's.
